The project highlights the existing architectonical heritage and ruins. It aims at bringing the historical buildings back to life not just in a contemplative manner but in an active way placing the historical heritage at the center of the stage and making it the main protagonist of the site. The area results comprehensible, publically accessible and socially inclusive in all its layers meaning that the structure of the plan and park is clear and diversified dividing the roads from the pedestrian and biking infrastructures. The master-plan is designed around the green spaces and the design institute and planned so that the existing natural habitat can be maintained in its entirety. On the upper north-west side close to the city’s infrastructure and built context we place the majority of the retail complex and following the new main road/axe inside the area hotels, parks, design centres and parking facilities are designed. The existing ruins are integrated in the design complex working around the existing buildings but incorporating them in the project with great respect towards the existing nature and context; “we design on tiptoes”. Our project works within spaces and footprints and in the Design Center we incorporate the ruins in a way that the existing constructed part becomes the open-air entrance courtyards for the institute; Constructed and voids are inverted and historical heritage is preserved and enhanced while working around each existing tree and preserving the local flora and fauna.
